Didn’t Porsche/VW make a few of these vans with Porsche engines for track service use?

There was the Porsche B32, a Vanagon with the engine from a 911 amongst other changes , for shuttling executives around Germany - is that what you were referring to?

I was v e r y intrigued by that picture ! Pretty certain Williams would not use anything as pedestrian as Type 2 to ferry their cars around, so this could be a meeting of VW cars of some sort – a while after that FW07 was declared surplus to requirements. Notice the nice 60s Lotus in the back on a similar vehicle, by the way.
I found the following here while doing a reverse Google search of the Williams atop the VW:
Pete Lovely not only used to race that Lotus; he had a VW dealership and later in his life he restored racing cars.

Pity Porsche got cold feet and did not dare to build more.
The B32 came about while doing hot-weather testing in Algeria. They would install lots of sensors in their prototypes... with a VW van following them - crammed to the gunnels with, if I remember correctly, telemetry/recording equipment. Of course the van would lag behind, so they decided to soup it up with a 911 engine (a standard 2,7 or a 3.0, can’t remember ).
Unfortunately there are lots of people who still believe it originated as a support vehicle/service barge for the Paris-Dakar. Yeah
